Original Artwork by Suzanne Adan, Tile Murals, "Knick, Knack, Paddywhack", 2002
Seven site-specific ceramic tile murals are placed below each of the seven windows of the childcare facility. Each mural visually tells a continuous narrative--using the alphabet, numbers, animals, birds, fish, plants, and simple shapes in the artist's characteristically fanciful style. They are placed at a child's eye level to encourage interaction and imagination.
The tiles are made of white stoneware clay with a black under glaze or engobe applied to the clay body. The drawing or carving was applied to the greenware surface using the "Sgraffito" (scratching) technique. The greenware tiles were then bisque fired. A clear glaze was applied to the bisqueware tile, which was then glaze fired for additional strength and durability for application to the external surface walls of the building.
